I have been a Michigan dog breeder since 2001. I started with English Shepherd dogs and have recently downsized.

I now breed Havanese dogs in my Michigan home.

The mission of Carneys Havanese is to maintain the charming personality and delightful conformation of the Havanese while focusing on good health through extensive testing.

Carneys Havanese is a boutique kennel in southeast Michigan. Breeding is my hobby I have chosen to pursue in retirement.

My dogs live and sleep with us in our home. They enjoy lots of romping, a room off my kitchen dedicated to them and their antics. I feed them grain-free, chicken-free high quality, USA made kibble. Occasionally I will give them a raw femur bone or elk antler to chew on.

We have beautiful Michigan summers. This is my garden ...of course the dogs are not allowed to play here once they are grown up!!!

Our Havanese Dogs

When I realized how much I love breeding English Shepherd dogs--bringing the best out of a sire and a bitch to create an improvement in the breed or to extend an excellent lineage--I began to look for a smaller breed to add to our kennel. I am not getting any younger and wanted a smaller breed with minimal shedding, no dander and a happy personality that works with children as well as adults.

I researched this for two years, went to dog shows, met other dogs and talked to breeders. My Havanese, Phoebe, came to me from the Roughrider Kennel of Kitty Braund in Great Falls Montana. A long way from Michigan but worth every mile I flew to pick up Phoebe. Kitty wrote the bible on the Havanese breed, JOYOUS HAVANESE and is, beyond being a highly respected breeder, a wonderful person and mentor.

On Losing a Dog
Every dog that leaves my life takes with him a piece of my heart. But every new dog that comes into my life gives me a piece of his.
If I live long enough, perhaps every segment of my heart will become dog and I will be as loving and giving as they are.

Our English Shepherd Dogs

We became familiar with English Shepherds when we dog sat for our daughter's English Shepherd, Spice. Jenny adopted Spice as a rescue dog when she lived in downtown Atlanta, GA. Spice is loyal, intelligent, calm and regal. She is a true soulmate. I have no doubt she has awesome farm instincts but she has adapted well to suburban life.

As frequent and willing dog sitters, my husband and I fell in love with her! When the empty nest syndrome became more than I could handle, there was no question I would get an English Shepherd. But, I did do some research. I learned they are mostly known as farm dogs, not city dogs. I joined several Yahoo chat groups that talk about everything from rescue dogs to feeding to illnesses to joys and sorrows. I thoroughly read the English Shepherd website, www.englishshepherd.org. Here you will learn about their health, training, history and about stock dogs. Breeders are listed as well as facts you should consider before getting a dog.
