Why Do Puppies Twitch When They Sleep?

If you watch a young puppy sleeping you will notice it twitching, jerking and sometimes making little sounds.

This is perfectly normal and actually a healthy activity. Because puppies spend so much of their days and nights sleeping, the twitches help their little muscles develop and strengthen. Likewise for the sounds which strengthen their vocal chords.

The older the puppy gets, and the more time it spends moving around its space, the less twitching you will notice.

I find it so endearing!

Day 2–Everyone is Gaining!

With seven puppies, I expect them to be small. There is, after all, only so much room in mom’s belly! I weigh my newborns twice a day to catch any weight loss that may have to be addressed with supplemental feedings. I was particularly concerned about the little boy who weighed in at just 90 grams (3 ounces) at birth.  I was ready to start to feed him, but really wanted him to take full advantage of mom’s colostrom during those critical first days. (A dam’s milk does not usually come in until the 3rd day or so). Colostrom is loaded with nutrients and antibodies for puppies. Nature’s way of getting them off to a good start.

Suffice it to say I was nervous.

It is quite common for puppies (and human babies, as I understand it) to lose a bit of weight their first couple days of life. Imagine my surprise and glee when all the puppies actually gained weight their first 24 hours of life! Even the little guy.

Kudos to Sienna!

Sienna’s puppies, day 2. The little guy is on the left just below the dark brown and white pup that is about twice the size!

Porsche Is Available!

Note: Porsche has a new home now, in Chicago!

Our sweet puppies from our sports car litter are now 2 1/2 months old! I have made my decision as to who to reserve for show and am now looking for a home for Porsche.

As you can see, he is tri-color…sable brown, black and white. He is extremely outgoing and friendly. Greets everyone he meets with his tail wagging like a windshield wiper! He plays well with our other puppies and adult dogs and is doing great with peeing on a pee pad! He will be great with children and other pets.

Porsche has had two of his DHPP vaccine boosters, is totally dewormed and is registered with AKC. Both his parents have passed all health tests recommended for Havanese and results are posted on the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals website. His sire is a Gold Grand Champion and his dam is a Champion…just a few points shy of Grand Champion!

Send me a note if you’d like to hear more about him.

We Have Puppies!! Two need homes

Sunshine whelped 3 beautiful puppies on February 20. They will be 8 weeks old tomorrow. Time flies when you have puppies! Anyway, we are looking for homes for the two boys, Porsche and Beemer. Puppies are fat and healthy and playing with each other, their mom and their roomates!

This is Beemer. He is a gold sable parti and has amazing eyes. He is also a love bug!

This is little Mercedes. She is currently reserved for the show circuit…assuming she gets to standard.

This is Porche. He loves to sit on my lap. he is a dark sable parti.

This is Boo!

Boo was born Oct. 17. Because of her birthday’s proximity to Halloween, my grandson (pictured on the first page of this website from 9 years ago!) gave the puppies Halloween names.

Boo is 10 weeks old. She is looking for a forever home. She currently lives in southwest Florida.

Boo has a very outgoing disposition! Some would say she is feisty…even a bit bossy of her sister who is staying with me. But Boo is all love, is mad about giving kisses and enjoys playing fetch. A real people-puppy.

If you would like to learn more about Boo you can send me an email at j7carney@gmail.com. If you would like to be considered as her forever family, please fill out the questionnaire on this website under the “Forms” section.

And if you would like to know more about Fozzie and Luna, Boo’s parents, go to the “About Us” section of this website.
